What is a good anti-virus that will not slow my computer?

I recently installed MacAfee and it noticeably slowed down my computer. I also upgraded my ram from around 500mb to 2g at around the same time but it did not help.

Eset nod32, it has the equal highest detection rate with Kaspersky and it won’t slow down your computer much at all.

Use AVG. It’s free and lightweight.

McAfee is a load of trash.

I use Avast! It’s free, lightweight and efficient.

    AVG is another good option.

PC Tools is what I have been running for all most 2 years and it does not slow my lap top or desk top down like McAfee, and yes it’s FREE

I don’t know which antivirus is lightweight but I personally vouch for avast, bitdefender, trend micro, or AVG. I didn’t like kaspersky because of a bad experience and outpost is too controlling. i got a virus while using symantec endpoint protection once, so…no.

It’s better to stop thinking “antivirus” programs will protect you.

    Instead you should:

    1. Set up and use almost exclusively a limited user account.

    2. Google the phrase “social engineering” and read the first five results.

    3. Install Windows updates automatically.

    4. Use Firefox with the NoScript extension.

    5. Turn off autorun in Windows:

And doing all this will not slow down your computer, either.

I think it should be helpful that you upgrade your ram to speed up your pc. The reason may be that MacAfee makes your pc slow down. I suggest you should uninstall MacAfee to see whether your pc can be sped up. I don’t think anti-virus soft wares will slow your computer. Most of time, it is because that the CPU has been taken up too much. There may be some redundant files in the registry of your pc. You can insatall one optimization software to eliminate these junk files, then there will be more space in the CPU.Your pc will become faster. This kind of soft ware also can prevent your pc from viruses. You can try http://www.1Click-Optimize-Pc.com, It may help you.

There are a few things to consider when choosing an antivirus program. There are good products from the main antivirus companies, but how effective is your chosen program? How much does it slow down your PC? How much does it take over your PC (popups with questions all the time, for example)?

Have a look at the reviews for the latest antivirus programs on http://www.datadefender.net. There are download links as well and all the major companies do free trials so you can see for yourself how good they are before buying a licence.

In my opinion McAfee and Norton will slow down older computers a lot, but are otherwise good; BitDefender is quite good but extremely intrusive on your day-to-day operation; the most effective is Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 and the lightest on system resources is ESET Smart Security (NOD32). Have a look at the other reviews on datadefender, download a trial version and see for yourself.

It will also help speed up your computer if you do a disk cleanup (get rid of old internet files, etc.), uninstall old programs that you don’t need and defrag your hard disk.
