Computer Running Slow, How do I check to make sure it has not been hijacked?

My computer/internet has been running really slow for about 2 weeks without any reason. I use DSL and it use to be fast. I am concerned that perhaps my computer has been hijacked. Can anyone tell me how I can check my computer for something like this? Thanks in advance. JK

Go to http://www.avast.com download the free program and do a complete scan. Then also do a boot time scan: Boot time Avast Antivirus Scanning
Avast Antivirus offers a “boot time” virus scan of your PC. This allows the antivirus engine to scan all of the files on your hard drive before any other programs load – useful in cases where you have an infection which cannot be cleaned because the “file is in use”

To schedule a boot-time scan using Avast:

    1. Right click on the blue a logo at the bottom right of your task bar and then select the “Start avast! Antivirus” option from the menu which appears
Right click the blue A Avast logo

    2. Avast will run a memory scan on your PC and you’ll see this screen while the scan completes and the control panel opens. Just wait for this screen to pass – it will take about 60-90 seconds:
Wait for this Avast screen to pass

    3. Once Avast! loads, you’ll see this strange looking control panel – don’t worry, we don’t need to decipher any of the buttons – we just want to click using the right mouse button anywhere in the Gray area.
    Avast control CENTER

    4. When you right click on the control center, you’ll see a new menu. From this menu, select the “Schedule Boot-Time Scan…” option:
    Schedule Boot-Time Scan

    5. You’lll now get a new screen, as shown below. Select the option “Scan all local disks” and tick the “Advanced Options” box. Select the options “Move infected file to Chest” and “Allow delete or move” from the two menus in the bottom half of the window, before pressing Schedule:
Scheduling a boot-time scan in Avast

    6. Once you have pressed OK, you will be given a prompt to reboot your PC. Check that you have no unsaved work open and then click “Yes”. Your PC will reboot, and before Windows reloads, Avast will perform a virus scan.

The virus scan will take about 30-45 minutes on your PC, and should be completely automatic. The scan will be complete when your PC reloads Windows, and you need take no further action.

Hey it could be because of a registry problem on your PC.

The regsitry is the central database where all your settings and data is stored for your computer. Often, this registry database gets clogged up with junk files and corrupt files.

One of the easiest ways to speed up your PC and Internet is to get all the corrupted files from your registry removed. You can see how to do this with this tutorial: http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/registry_cleaner_tools.html

Hope it all goes well for you.

For running slow there are many causes:
    Microsoft Registry Problems
    RAM
    De-Fragmenting
    Etc.

Clean windows registry can speed up the computer.
Registry Cleaner can fix your pc errors.
Over time, you install new programs, uninstalled unimportant programs, update software’s, install new devices,
download files from the web, etcetera, hence embarking all records in the registry system.
This is normal, but it is not wise to leave it untouched.
Once in a while, you have to check and remove files that are no longer in use to maintain the speed of your PC.
    Clean registry make pc faster.

Your PC is probably infected with adware & spyware if:
    * You have downloaded music online
    * Your PC is running extremely slow
    * You are pestered by those horrible popup ads
    * Your homepage keeps changing
Don’t let people invade your privacy and slow down your PC!
If so, then take a few moments to download anti-spyware software to get rid of spywares and get rid of adwares if your computer is infected.
