How do I connect a new laptop to the internet without disturbing my pc too much?
I’m running Windows Vista on a fairly powerful pc, connected via a usb modem provided by Orange. It was a nightmare to set up and as we’re all fighting to use the pc at the same time, we’re considering buying a laptop, to use in a different room at the same time the pc is running. But as a complete novice, and with no desire to go wireless, where do I start?

Buy a hub and a couple of ethernet cables and connect the laptop to the desktop using ethernet. You can then set up the laptop on the Net by using Internet Connection Sharing, which is built in to Vista on the desktop. You just have to set up a couple of local IP addresses in the networking section in Control Panel.
