Well in order to reformat you need the original disk i believe
so like put in the disk and when you power up your pc press the f12 button and continue from there

You mean “restore” your pc to factory settings. Formating is changing or reconstructing the file system for volumes of your hard drive that also deletes everything on that volume in the process.

Anyway, there are 2 ways to restore your computer to factory settings.
    1. If your computer has a “Recovery” partition (usually saved as the D: drive) created by your manufacturers, you can use that to restore it to the factory settings. Launch the recovery by booting your computer and holding F11 (the exact key changes depending on your manufacturer). Another way to boot into recovery is turn off your computer with out fully shutting it down, then restart.
    2. Also, if you have a Recovery disk created by the manufacturers (i believe you can also buy/get them separately), you can also do that. Put in the disk, restart, and follow the instructions.

If you do not have a recovery partition or recovery disk, then you can get almost the same results by reinstalling your operating system (preferably without formatting or deleting any hard drive volume/partition). All the programs and settings will be removed. Your old files will be stored on a Windows.old folder.

Im considering foregoing the Big Sur leg of our trip in lieu of the Northern Coast all the way up to the far north redwoods and back, but hope that Im not making a big mistake, knowing that we may not make our way to California ever again.
