How do I pick up an existing wifi signal with my pc and a linksys WRT54G2 wireless router?

My apartment complex added free wifi, but I don’t want to spend $99 on a wireless ethernet bridge. I already have the router. I should be able to pick up the signal, right?

As it comes out of the box, the WRT54G doesn’t support AP client mode (to be a wireless bridge). However, if your Linksys WRT54G2 is still Linux-based, you can download a replacement firmware that will support that. (The first four versions of WRT54Gs were Linux-based, but after that, they dropped using Linux in favor of a proprietary VxWorks OS). The latter is not as hackable. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series#WRT54G2 , the G2 uses VxWorks, but version 1.0 at least supported DD-WRT. Later versions are in the works.

http://aruljohn.com/info/linksys/ has info on DD-WRT. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=1115 talks about using the Alchemy firmware to do the same.
