1. Uninstall games and programs you don’t use anymore
2. De-fragment your computer several times in a row (this will take a bit)
3. Buy a better computer processing unit (CPU)

The quick reply to this commonly-asked question is: Throw it out the window. That will speed it up to 32 feet per second per second. 🙂
If you’re NOT running Windows, read no further.
Windows gets clogged up with a lot of cruft over time. The Registry gets bloated, cache files fill up, disk space gets sparse, and there are temp files config files, and probably a trojan horse or two all competing for computer resources.
One thing I’d suggest you do (of course, re-installing from the original CD is one option a lot of people choose, but you have to back up everything you don’t want to lose first, then restore it after), is go to Microsoft’s free Live Onecare site and run the scans that are offered there. Microsoft wants to sell this as a service, but a free trial is offered that can go a long way to identifying and clearing up problems that are affecting your computer. For example, when I ran it on one of my older machines, it found and removed over 900 invalid Registry entries!
One you’ve done that, start exploring what’s eating your disk space, if you have any unnecessary processes running (everyone does) and perhaps run a complete scan for viruses and other malware.
It’s a fact of life. Over time, Windows gets bloated and slow. I think Microsoft simply hopes people will buy new computers every couple of years rather than deal with an imperfect operating system.

All excellent answers. But high speed internet is a lot faster than dsl. Most servers (phone connection) have too heavy a load and it takes forever to get online and too many interuptions. Cable and satelite servers are faster and more reliable. The best bet is to upgrade. That means having more ram installed and getting rid of programs and games that use too many bytes. Also get rid of wallpapers but a screen saver will prevent you from having start up problems. Take the puter in to a reputable computer shop to have the ram increased and cleaning. Hope this helps cause there is nothing like a pc that doesn’t do what you want it to do when you want to do whatever you do. lol

Well… you couldve always gotten a small virus or any kind of infection.. you could reformat it in this case, and that would clean everything. Or you can follow the other answers and just clean out your computer or buy faster parts for it. xD

You can use a registry cleaner to clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause “computer slow”.
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

First, backup all your data to an external medium.
Then, if you have no hardware problems, do this:
(1) Run a FULL anti-virus scan with a good virus scanner. Get free editions of Avast or Antivir. Use the latest virus definitions file. But don’t install or run more than one anti-virus at the same time.
http://www.avast.com
http://www.avira.com
(2) Run anti-spyware scans with Super Anti-spyware and malwarebytes free editions.
http://malwarebytes.org/
http://www.superantispyware.com/
(3) Ensure all Microsoft security updates are applied.
(4) Run disk cleanup to delete old temp files and other junk
(5a) Run chkdsk once to scan for file system errors. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
(5b) Run a thorough disk defrag. Use a good defragmenter for this, and also run a boot-time defrag to fix the MFT and page file if they are fragmented. Check out Diskeeper 2009, which is widely acknowledged to be the best defragger around. Their website has free 30-day trial versions. http://www.diskeeper.com
(6) Disable unnecessary background processes and services that take up memory.
(7) Make sure all the hardware components have the latest and most stable drivers. Video card performance in particular is strongly dependent on drivers.
You do not need to clean out the registry or mess with the registry in ANY way whatsoever. Deleting a wrong key from the registry can damage your operating system.
Good Luck!

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don’t always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
First, if you haven’t cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC’s resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click “Control Panel”, and then double-click “Internet Options”.
3. On the General tab, click “Delete Files” under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the “Delete all offline content” check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type “msconfig.exe”
4. In the “system configuration utility”,click either “service” or “startup” tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click “OK”

Clean windows registry can speed up the computer.
Over time, you install new programs, uninstalled unimportant programs, update software’s, install new devices,
download files from the web, etcetera, hence embarking all records in the registry system.
This is normal, but it is not wise to leave it untouched.
Once in a while, you have to check and remove files that are no longer in use to maintain the speed of your PC.
Clean registry make pc faster.
