How much electricity does desktop pc use when networking?

Desktop pc upstairs, have music playing randomly through a laptop downstairs which is networked. Was wondering how much electricity the pc used when logged on,with nothing else running. Also how much electric is used on the laptop in general.

Althought the Desktop will use more power than the laptop they still use a minimal amount regardless. Even if they were both fully loaded and constantly running the CPU(s) at full capacity computers are a lot more energy efficient now and wouldn’t run up too much of a bill, although you’d see an increase obviously.

It really all depends on how many devices are installed in your computer. It depends on the CPU and amount of hardrives and video card mainly.
I have an AMD 6000 X2 CPU and two 7600 GT video cards and 4 hard drives and two burners. While the system is running I use about 190 Watts of power. With the dual monitors it goes up to 220 Watts.
If you only have 1 hard drive and not a very powerful processor or Video card then you probably use around 100Watts. So it is like leaving a 100W light bulb turned on.

If you want to play your stored music without the need of the Desktop then think about getting a Network Attached Storage Drive. It is a harddrive that has a Network Interface Card. It gets an IP address from your router….after you hook it up of course. Then you put your stuff you want to access on to it. Then as long as you are connected to your LAN you have access to your files. I love it. Try this one.

I got the Simpletech 250GB and paid $250 for it. You can get this 500 GB for $144. The prices have dropped. The cool thing about this one is that you can attach another usb drive to it and it will let you access that drive over the NAT too. Acually you can attach two drives….or two USB printers…because it also acts as a print server.

    I highly recommend this!!
