There are 2 ways.
Put the files inside your user account’s directories.
And have your friends log in under a different account, like guest or something.
You can’t access files in other user accounts.
The other way is to unshare the directories where the pictures are located.
But you still have to have your friends log onto your computer under a different account.

The format is irrelevant. Access to the files is more critical. For that and other security reasons, I’d suggest you create separate, limited logins (without administrator privileges) for them. This can save your behind if they download something and it tries to take over your machine.
If you do this on Windows Vista or 7, make sure you have UAC enabled and have real passwords on any and all administrator-level accounts so they can’t do an end-run on your protection.
If you do this, make some tests to see if they can still access your files from their logins. You may have to take extra steps to remove some file privileges from them.
Hope that helps.

No matter how you set up permissions in Windows, anyone could still access the files by booting from a Linux live CD. Save the pictures on an external hard drive, and keep it in a safe place when not in use.
