Buy at least another 1GB of DDR1 184-pin RAM. 2GB more (for 3 total) is likely a good ideal if you motherboard supports it.

Run the Online RAM scanner at http://www.crucial.com to see how much RAM your computer can support. (Use Internet Explorer).

Also, unload any unwanted programs that load when you start windows. Doing so, usually speeds up your computer greatly. Unload MSN messenger, camera manager software and other bloatware that loads when you start windows.

    Start—>Run

    msconfig

    Click OK

In the box, click Services tab, check “Hide all MS services”. Untick any unwanted services.

    Click the Startup Tab

    Uncheck unwated apps.

    Click OK

    Restart

a quick, easy way is to clear your temporary internet files. click on your “start” menu, then click “find” or “search”. when the window opens, type in “temporary internet files”, and search. open the file titled “temporary internet files”, and then select all the files in that folder, and delete them. that should help, also using the same method, clear your “cookie” folder.

Try using “CCleaner”. Just hit the download button at the top right. Install. You don’t need all the additional Options so uncheck all of them.
Hit Finish. that should run the Ccleaner.
Hit the “Analyze” once done hit “Run Cleaner” Click “ok” then that should clear a good amount of memory that is wasted.
Hit the registry button on the left side.
“Scan for issues” [Don’t worry about all these files.]
Once done hit “Fix Selected Issues” , Hit “No”
    “Fix All selected issues”
Then another thing that slow down a LOT of computers is all the processes that run at start up.
Still in Ccleaner go to “Tools” then “Start Up”
And highlight all that you see in the graph
and hit “Disable” then restart your system.
This should fix all the problems that you have with your system slowing down. You should run the ccleaner once every week, but you don’t have to go to “tools” unless you install a new program. If you have any more questions e-mail me at “[email protected]

    Visit http://www.ccleaner.com

Download the software…it’s free and works great!

But before installing the program, remove Symantec antivirus…
    Then install and run CCleaner…

You may want to download a better spyware/antivirus program…the two
that I’d choose from would be AVG Antivirus or Avira Antivir

I have an old Dell also.2003 with specs very close to yours. You most likely have IE. 8 in it also. These are a challenge to bring them up to today’ s new systems. If you are in the market for a new system- buy one. Other wise, work with a local tech to up date it.Or do it your self online with Dell or Microsoft. I chose the last option.Mine is 85% finished. A person will make mistakes (I did!) , but in the end you will have what you want. Take care.

You can use a registry cleaner to clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause “computer slow”.
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don’t always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven’t cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC’s resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

    2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

    1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
    2. Click Start, click “Control Panel”, and then double-click “Internet Options”.
    3. On the General tab, click “Delete Files” under Temporary Internet Files.
    4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the “Delete all offline content” check box , and then click OK.
    5. Click OK.

    3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

    1. Open your Start menu.
    2. Click Run
    3. In the command screen type “msconfig.exe”
    4. In the “system configuration utility”,click either “service” or “startup” tab
    5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
    6. Click “OK”

Microsoft Registry Problems = Slow Computer!
Clean windows registry means faster PC performance. The registry is one of the most valuable sections of your PC. This is where important information and directories relating to installed software, hardware, temporary files downloaded from the Internet, created documents and folders, and other minor and minor applications are stored.
Over time, you install new programs, uninstalled unimportant programs, update software’s, install new devices, download files from the web, etcetera, hence embarking all records in the registry system. This is normal, but it is not wise to leave it untouched. Once in a while, you have to check and remove files that are no longer in use to maintain the speed of your PC.

There are MANY reasons for computer slow downs:
    not enough memory
too many programs starting up with windows at boot up time
    too many junk files

First, backup all your data to an external medium.

Then, if you have no hardware problems, do this:

    (1) Run a FULL anti-virus scan with a good virus scanner. Get free editions of Avast or Antivir. Use the latest virus definitions file. But don’t install or run more than one anti-virus at the same time.
    http://www.avast.com
    http://www.avira.com

    (2) Run anti-spyware scans with Super Anti-spyware and malwarebytes free editions.
    http://malwarebytes.org/
    http://www.superantispyware.com/

    (3) Ensure all Microsoft security updates are applied.

    (4) Run disk cleanup to delete old temp files and other junk

(5a) Run chkdsk once to scan for file system errors. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

(5b) Run a thorough disk defrag. Use a good defragmenter for this, and also run a boot-time defrag to fix the MFT and page file if they are fragmented. Check out Diskeeper 2009, which is widely acknowledged to be the best defragger around. Their website has free 30-day trial versions. http://www.diskeeper.com

    (6) Disable unnecessary background processes and services that take up memory.

    (7) Make sure all the hardware components have the latest and most stable drivers. Video card performance in particular is strongly dependent on drivers.

You do not need to clean out the registry or mess with the registry in ANY way whatsoever. Deleting a wrong key from the registry can damage your operating system.

    Good Luck!

The best way is to try to Tune up your PC with software programs of your choice that will clean up you pc and give it a boost in performance. You may want to start by unistalling any unecessary programs you do not use. The simple way is to go to add/remove under the control panel. While it may remove the program usually leaves some unecessary files behind. You can get a detailed uninstall of programs by using specialized software. If that does not help you may need to scan your registry for any errors and delete any unecessary media or other files. If you have done all of this an still no boost in your performence. You may want to cosider upgrade in memory if your motherboard allows it. It may already be runing in max memory capacity.Feel free to contact me =) Try the site below the Great package deal.

Well before you go out any buy expensive upgrades or a new computer, why not try to fully optimize your current computer? I see lots of people making the mistake of spending hundreds, even thousands on upgrades when they didn’t even bother to maximize their current computers full potential.
