Is it possible to connect remotely to my home PC over the internet without special software?

I have both my laptop and PC running windows 7, and I can connect/control the pc from the laptop remotely over the LAN (local area network) by using Windows “remote connection”. I would like to know if the same is possible thru the internet. For example, could I control/connect to my home pc from my work computer?

I use RealVNC. You set up the server somewhere, set a password, and leave it on. Then you can connect to it with a “viewer” from any other computer.

TeamViewer is another program that does about the same thing, but it needs someone to be sitting at the other computer to let you on (downside).

sure just enable remote desktop on ur pc (duh) and have your router forward it. port 3389 is the default port that it listens on, so forward that port to your pc and you can connect from home. just find out your routers ip address and connect 🙂

I’ve seen it done with “special software” as you call it, but I doubt you would be able to do it from work. Even if you use Windows “remote connect” you are using special software, it’s the software that comes with Windows. Most work situations have things set up so they are safe from people who might want to snoop or pirate on their work network. I’m pretty sure they don’t want you playing around with your home computer from the work computer as that might make their system vulnerable, unless you have a special setup to work from home.

http://www.logmein.com is a great way to do that. but in order to get connected you need to have an account and you also need to add ur home pc to logmein account.

I would highly recommend using LogMeIn. Although LogMeIn requires you to download their software in order to be able to remotely access your computer, it works perfectly. All you have to do is sign up for free LogMeIn service, and download their software on every computer that you want to remotely access. Then, when you go away from home, just go to logmein.com, and log in to your account. It will let you access your computer remotely, as long as the computer is on, and connected to the Internet. I am currently using LogMeIn, and I have used it for over a year. They did not charge me anything for this service.

    Hello,
With TeamViewer you can connect to your home PC without anyone is sitting in front of it. Configurate your TeamViewer and set up a predefine password. With your ID and this password you can access to your PC as long as it is on and has a internet connection.
Another advantage: You do not have to install anything on your PC at work. Only run the software and get connected.

If you need any additional information let me know.

    Cheers Inga

Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and all. Nevertheless think of if you added some great photos or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this site could undeniably be one of the best in its niche. Terrific blog!
