What are the first steps to setting up a laptop with wifi?

I have a friend in Germany who bought a new Sony laptop that is wifi capable. What does he have to do to configure it for wifi, step by step? When he tries logging on to the internet he gets a message that it cannot detect a connection, even though he is right next to a router.

go into network connections and make sure wifi is enabled and the others connection types are disabled, then reboot. Also alot of systems have an on /off button for wifi as a safty precaution, make sure it is on.

well first you need a wireless router then the computer itself needs to have a wireless network card. and if your running windows vista there will be a little text box that pops up in the lower right corner that says wireless networks are available. then click on that and scroll through the list until you see your network and if its pass code protected then just input the pass code and you should be fine. and if that doesn’t work then either your computer doesn’t have a wireless net work card or its been turned off. to turn it back on there should be a little symbol in the bottom right corner that looks like two computer monitors click on that and it should have a choice to diagnose problem and that should give you the option to turn the wireless network card back on if its off
