Try CCleaner. It’s one of the best and it’s free. There a good chance it’ll make your computer fast again.

You mostly have to many startup programs and service running. Windows Vista has about 140 service that startup when the average home user only need about 70-80 of those.

Let just start with your startup program first and see if that help.

In the start menu type “msconfig” in the run box, you will have to approve the request to continue.
Go to the startup tap and uncheck all but your security programs (anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall), and click apply.
Why’ll your still in the msconfig and if you would like to stop the user account control for popping up (the box that ask if you would like to approve the request, you the window that came up when you started msconfig).
Go to the tool tab and under tool name look for Disable UAP and left click on that (you only need to click it once, nothing else will come up).
Left click on OK and Restart you computer (it will take about 2 restarts for the O/S to startup a little faster).
With out those startup program running in the back ground your computer should be a little fast.

I was able to get Windows Vista Home Premium to startup in 1:15 minute doing that a lone, and all I have is a Celeron 2.0Ghz Dual Cure CPU.

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don’t always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven’t cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC’s resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

    2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

    1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
    2. Click Start, click “Control Panel”, and then double-click “Internet Options”.
    3. On the General tab, click “Delete Files” under Temporary Internet Files.
    4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the “Delete all offline content” check box , and then click OK.
    5. Click OK.

    3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

    1. Open your Start menu.
    2. Click Run
    3. In the command screen type “msconfig.exe”
    4. In the “system configuration utility”,click either “service” or “startup” tab
    5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
    6. Click “OK”

I hope you read this. I had a computer that was running very slow and I thought that it was clean after running several scans. I loaded Kaspersky Internet Security on it and found over 200 spyware and viruses. Also, when you have a registry error the speed of you machine will slow way down. I also agree with the post that said to run CCleaner. This will help. Here are two sites that have free downloads that might help http://www.easypcerrorfix.com and http://www.malwarebytes.org

Assuming you have no hardware issues, do this:

    (1) Run a FULL anti-virus scan with a good virus scanner. Get free editions of AVast or Antivir. Use the latest virus definitions file. But don’t install or run more than one anti-virus at the same time.

    (2) Run anti-spyware scans with Spybot S&D and malwarebytes.

    (3) Ensure all Microsoft security updates are applied.

    (4) Run disk cleanup to delete old temp files and other junk

(5a) Run chkdsk once to scan for file system errors. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

(5b) Run a thorough disk defrag. Use a good defragmenter for this, and also run a boot-time defrag to fix the MFT and page file if they are fragmented. You can check out Diskeeper 2009, which is widely acknowledged to be the best defragger around. Their website has free 30-day trial versions. http://www.diskeeper.com

    (6) Disable unnecessary background processes and services that take up memory.

    (7) Make sure all the hardware components have the latest and most stable drivers. Video card performance in particular is strongly dependent on drivers.

    Good Luck!

Clean windows registry can speed up the computer.
Registry Cleaner can fix your pc errors.
Over time, you install new programs, uninstalled unimportant programs, update software’s, install new devices,
download files from the web, etcetera, hence embarking all records in the registry system.
This is normal, but it is not wise to leave it untouched.
Once in a while, you have to check and remove files that are no longer in use to maintain the speed of your PC.
    Clean registry make pc faster.

Hard drive fragmentation is a major cause of slowness. Fragmentation is created as files are created, edited or as files and programs are downloaded, they get broken up and saved wherever free space is available. Then the computer has to work extra hard to restore and open or run these files and programs. As it gets worse it can cause, slows, program hangs, freezes, crashes etc. Defrag your computer. Diskeeper is a great product for that.
