What is currently considered the must have processor when buying a PC?

Hi guys. I’m thinking about buying a new PC and want to know what processor I should look for. I’m a fairly average PC user, but I remember when buying my PC 6 years ago it was a given that you should get a Intel Pentium 4 processor. What is considered today’s equivalent?

Thanks in advance.

How long is a piece of string?

I guess a benchmark one is the Intel Q6600 quad core, which costs about £120 on it’s own.

I mean, you can go better, with the Q9550 for about £200, or worse with (say) dual core E4600.

Basically, you tend to get what you pay for.

I think Intel are ahead at the moment, though AMD are often cheaper. Remember though, comparing clock speeds across brands is almost irrelevant.

In summary, work out how much you want to pay, and get the Intel Core2 Duo that matches.

Check out the reviews on Ebuyer.

Intel i7 Nehalem is the current state of the art…at least for about 3 months or so. LOL

I am tempted to build one, but I have some discretionary money for it. There is nothing wrong with the old standby Q6600 and E6850.

Unfortunately, although they have some new stuff in the works, AMD is still Intel’s weaker sister.
