What is Linux ?

Linux is comparable to Unix-like, operating system for computers. An operating system is a language code infrastructure that interfaces with the hardware of your computer system. It detects your hardware and enables to be available for your software programs so that the software runs smoothly on your computer. Software is written then, with the specific operating system protocols in mind. An operating system generally recognizes only the software that is written to interface with it.

Although UNIX is where operating system began, the most familiar example of an operating system for most users today is Microsoft Windows. However, there are key differences between Linux operating systems and Microsoft Windows.

Linux is an open-source type of operating system. This indicates that the source code for Linux is available for inspection and improvement publicly. The advantages of open-source products vary from the benefits of inventive input from programmers all over the world, to security. With the readily available source code in the public domain, programmers all over the world can vigorously test open-source products. This is much more complex with a closed system like Microsoft Windows because the source code is not available for public.

Another main difference between Microsoft Windows and Linux is that Linux is based on the operating system of UNIX, while Windows is a stand-alone operating system or proprietary. Many people who consider switching to Linux think if their current Windows software will run on Linux. The Linux operating system was not intended or designed to run Windows software. However, it is the optimism of Linux enthusiasts that people will go to Linux-alternative software, as more applications are written for the Linux environment.

There are no definite numbers of Linux users exist because registration is not required, but the number is estimated to be in millions. Linus Torvalds started building Linux in 1991 when he was an undergraduate student at Helsinki University in Finland. He continued developing Linux with the help of volunteer hackers and programmers. Linux licensing enables the user to freely copy and distribute the software with its source code.
