How does QoS work in a home wifi set up?

How does a wireless router know what priority category to put a stream into?

It doesn’t. WiFi doesn’t use QoS. So it’ll be first come, first serve.

If your router supports QoS (many don’t as there really isn’t any standard) then the router allows you to set the system to allow the level of quality for the type of transfer or you can set a particular IP to have priority etc. There are newer standards that will allow REAL QoS
    here is a good article.

Nearly all Wifi for home is wifi based on HUB type technology and has no ability to adjust priority. So the simple answer is MOST wireless routers have no idea what priority to put a stream into as they treat all packets the same. There are some higher end ones that try.
Microtik and other specialty wifi boards do have better QoS and it can help.
Even Linksys has the RV series with “QoS”

Not sure how well they really work.
