I have a Dell 3000 series PC I purchased in 05 with 512MB of RAM. Can I add memory to this PC?

I know enough about PC’s just to be dangerous. I know this wasn’t too expensive of a PC, but it is running extremely slow and every now and then it says my memory is almost full. Can memory be added to this PC, how is that done, and approximately what would the cost be if I took my hard drive to a PC store? I was advised that I should have about 2.4 G of memory, does that sound right.

Here is what manual says. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim3000/en/SM/parts.htm#wp1076397

It looks like you have two memory slots so you will have to chuck current stick(s) most likely to get even 1 GB (if you can add that much memory to this machine).

Go to http://www.crucial.com and use the system scanner which will scan your system and then advise your max ram possible for that machine and it will also give you the price and config of the ram.

It saves a lot of hassle .

Your machine can accommodate up to 2gb of total RAM in it’s two DIMM slots (memory slots). You would need to replace the memory you currently have with a matched pair of 1gb DDR sticks.

You will notice a dramatic improvement in performance from this relatively low cost upgrade.

However, the error you are getting may not be referring to RAM. You could also be running out of space on your hard drive, or it could be your paging file is too small. You can check the available space on your hard drive by going to My Computer, and clicking on your “C” drive. The used and available space should appear on the left side.

As for having a PC shop upgrade your memory, that may not be necessary. Upgrading RAM is the simplest of all PC upgrades, so you might want to give it a try yourself. Here is a good step-by-step with pics: http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/installing_dimm_memory_ram.htm

Just make sure you purchase compatible RAM from a reputable manufacturer like Kingston, Corsair, Crucial, or G.Skill. For your machine, you want to purchase 2 x 1GB (2 GB total) of 400-MHz DDR SDRAM memory. Expect to pay around $60 at http://www.newegg.com.

If you do decide to take it to a shop, you should not have to pay more than the tech’s minimum service charge above the cost of the memory. It seriously take about 5 minutes total. If I were doing this for one of my clients, I would charge for a 1/2 hour, which is $25.

    Good luck!
