What is making my computer run slow and freeze up?
The computer runs normal when first booted but if you try to do several processes at once it will freeze. I have throughly check the computer for Viruses and Spyware the system is clean. Also when the computer freezes or runs very slow the CPU is reading 99% idol, so no processes are running. Do you think it could be a memory or hard drive issue?
I’ve killed all unnecessary services and remove all items from MSCONFIG and the System Registry. Also, I have over 20 GB of free space on my hard drive. The system is a HP Laptop, with 1 GB of memory.
Thanks for your reponses.

Run a defragmentation thing.. you will need to leave it running but if you havent ever done one it will make it run as good as new. Here are instructions for a windows user:
Start
Programs
Acessories
System tools
Disc Defragmenter.
If you dont know what a disc defragment does, listen up.
When you save a file, the computer saves a part here and a part somewhere else and a part over there and when you open the file, it has to look for all parts of the file. If you havent run a disc defragment in a while then your computer will get crammed full of parts of files. a disc defragment will pull all of the different parts of the file together, making the whole file in one place, making it load faster and making your next defragmentation faster.
If that didnt do it, i suggest sending the computer into your nearest tech dude. He will fix it up more efficiently than i could ever help with.

There are four things that impact the speed of a computer.
1) Memory – specifically RAM on an intel-based PC. This provides channels for data to flow and everything you look at on a computer is loaded into the RAM. Based on your description, I would say this is probably the problem and you should increase the amount of RAM in the PC.
2) Storage – specifically free hard drive space. The more free space on the hard drive – or drives – you have, the easier it is for the RAM to pull data from it. If your hard drive is full, get a second hard drive (internal or external) and cut/paste data to it.
3) Processor speed. This is probably not your issue, but older PC’s don’t multitask as well as newer ones because of their processor speed. Dual processors are now shipping for consumer pc’s and they can do a lot more multitasking.
4) Network speed. This means if you’re loading a webpage from dial up, its slower than if you loaded it from a high speed connection.
The CPU usage is probably the cause of at least the first, if not the second piece. The easiest approach is to find out what is starting up on your PC and try to kill it – check the system tray (by the clock) and the Start Up folder in Programs. Delete things that you don’t need.
Next replace and/or increase the RAM. If it makes a difference, then stop. If not, then add a hard drive or get a thumb drive to pull the apps off.
If all that fails, you might need a new box. Don’t replace the processor. That’s really quite messy.
Good luck!

It could be a number of things like too many things downloaded, delete cookies and Internet files in the Internet options, empty recycle bin, defragment disk this should be in your accessories, then sys. tools.OH! and do a disk sweep or clean, it’s located in the same area. Or your operating system is about to go out. You’ll need the xp cd’s to get back started with a good virus protection. You shouldn’t have the slowness and the cutting off after this.
Hope this helped a lil’. Good luck!
