You may have too many applications kicking off at start up. This free download allows you to control what runs at start up:

like the other guy said before, you have a lot of programs running at start up, and vista itself takes a lot of the system resources, which make you computer slow.

Because you have a lot of programs loading all at once.

go to START, RUN, then type in msconfig. This will load up a window displaying your start up programs. Go to the tab Start Up and then uncheck unnecessary programs.

Vista also has lots of services running in the background that many normal users do not need.

Go here and find out which services you can live without that won’t affect performance & stability.

I have Vista on my Vista gaming rig and I really like it. In order to run really good Vista does have to be tweaked. Like the others said go into msconfig startup and uncheck the progs you dont need starting up all the time. Also try going into “power options” in the control panel and choose the “high performance” power scheme. If you haven’t already, turn that annoying UAC off too. Windows updates really helps, adding ram if you have less than 2GBs and installing the latest hardware drivers.

Why my computer is slow opening? This is due to the building of programs and process that have been added to your startup configuration over time. However, to increase your computer speed and performance you should limits these programs to just the bare bone essentials. Here is how:

How to speed up your startup

    1. Open your Start menu.
    2. Click Run
    3. In the command screen type “msconfig.exe”
    4. In the “system configuration utility”,click either “service” or “startup” tab
    5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
    6. Click “OK”
