What is a system administrator ?
All companies today are run with computers. As such, every office, may it be small or large, needs a system administrator to keep things smooth because his or her job is to ensure that a computer system is running at maximum efficiency and performance.
A system administrator is a graduate of computer science or any other related fields. Of course, the administrator should have experience dealing with computer systems for at least two years or have been a systems technician for a number of years, before becoming a systems administrator. He or she should have an extensive knowledge on all computer operations and the basics of how systems work in theory and in practice.
A good understanding of how the mainframe server performs, how to maintain a computer system, resolve computing problems, install software and patches, monitor systems, perform recovery and execute systems backup are skills needed by anyone who are aiming to become a systems administrator. Simply put, a systems administrator should be able to solve any problem that may occur in a system.
A system administrator should be able to determine what a system requires, depending on the operations used for each. For instance, a computer used in sales and a computer used in accounting have different software, hardware and functions needed. As such, a system administrator should determine which upgrades or problems to be solved are most effective for each department’s needs.
Most companies allow a system administrator to name his or her salary because it is a highly specialized field and most systems administrators are worth paying for, rather than spending plenty of money in fixing computers or completely changing the systems.
