Umm, it could well be that you are running far to much at one point, which is causing max capacity on your ram or processor.
So instead of the programs running smoothly, they have to take it in turns to load their bit. (as there is too much for it to be done all at the same time ). So each program in turn will go slower.
Upgrade the RAM and then the processor for faster processing.

Programs on start up or programs that is loading will slow down your computer. Another one is if it is infected by a Spyware or Malware.
But if the above answer is not the problem you may just add more RAM to your PC to make it run faster as Vista needs more RAM
or you can add a Flash or Memory Card ( ReadyBoost ) to make it run better and improve performance.

you should increase you RAM from 1GB to 2GB
Do you have video card?
If yes, is it a 256 MB graphics card or a 512 MB graphics card?
If you don’t have a graphics card ,try installing a 256 MB graphics card at least
Are you running many games or graphics intensive applications?
Try upgrading You RAM and graphics card RAM

You probably need more RAM. That’s easy to install, and inexpensive. If you’re computer’s running slow, do a Disk Cleanup, Defragment (if needed), run a scan with Lavasoft’s AdWare, Antivirus scan (AVG’s GREAT), and reboot your PC.
If you’re internet’s running slow, disconnect and reconnect your cables from the internet modem.
If you do all the above w/o installing more RAM, you’re system will run a lot faster. Just make sure you don’t have a lot of songs or pics on your PC. It’ll tear up your RAM (which controls your computer’s speed/performance).
Good luck!
