What is a cost free way to make a slow computer work faster?
I would like to make a computer faster without having to buy any hardware or shell out any money at this moment for software. I am a college student and can’t afford to shell out the big bucks or any size buck at this machine.
Thank you in advance

Do some basic computer maintenance.
Scan disk and defrag once a month.
Remove programs from your startup.
Run virus checks and adware/spyware scans regularly (at least once a week).
This can all be done for FREE!!

The reason why the computer is going very slow likely has to do with your registry on your sytem. (I’m not a techie so I’m not sure what that is).
My computer was going very slow. What I did was to reinstall windows on it. I was fortunate to have my original disks to do this. The computer now works like a brand new one.
One note of caution. If you do a reinstall be sure to back up your files. You can burn them to CD or get a back-up hard drive or jump drive. You might even be able to back the files up to your mp3 player.
Best of luck to you.

First make sure you do not have a any programs on your desk top only shortcuts. Get rid of the programs you never use through the control panel “Add Remove”. The download a free program called CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com and analyze you computer and delete the clipboard files. Reboot your system and it should run faster.

We’d have to know more abut the kind of hardware and OS that you have now to really be able to help.
In general, try to limit how much of your memory (RAM) is being used unnecessarily. Open up the task manager and sort the processes by “mem usage” figure out who’s taking up the most and if you need that program running right now.
Try these ideas:
1) Uninstall any program that you don’t actually need.
2) If there are lots of programs that start automatically whenever you log in, figure out how to make the ones you don’t use all the time not auto-start. Look for icons over by the clock – right click on them and look for a settings or config options and hopefully in there you’ll be able to tell it not to load automatically. If that doesn’t work there should at least be a close/exit options.
3) If you regularly run multiple IM clients, consider trying one of the 3rd party clients that can handle them all. For example, running just Pidgin or Trillian is probably going to take fewer resources than running MSN, AIM, Yahoo and GTalk.
4) If you’ve got one of those Norton/McAfee security suites, consider disabling everything but the antivirus and maybe the firewall. Those things can totally bog down your machine. Actually, running just a simple (and free) antivirus like Avast or AVG will require fewer resources than the bloated “security suites” If you want/need spam filtering, the stuff built into Mozilla Thunderbird or the free SpamBayes add-on for Outlook are good.
5) If you’ve got Microsoft or Google’s desktop search running, disable it. They both hog resources while indexing your files. If you don’t find yourself using them regularily, ditch them.
6) Consider breaking down and doing a re-install of Windows. Sadly over time it just tends to slow down. Make sure you backup all of your files first though! (and have the install files/CDs for any additional programs you’ll need).
If 1-5 don’t help and you don’t want to go through the trouble of reinstalling everything, break down and buy some more RAM. You can do a decent upgrade for like $30-40 these days if you watch the Ads and it’s worth it.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause “computer slow”.
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

Do you have a lot of background programs running like msn messenger, explorer, anti virus etc(icons that you see at the lower right of your screen)? Normally these will eat up your memory causing your Windows PC to slow down.
Why not give PC Booster 2008 a try to boost your PC performance in 2 minutes. i have used for 3 years and it works great!
If you haven’t cleaned your registry for some time. You should do it now. The registry in Windows PC contains information regarding your updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC’s resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed.
PC Booster contains the latest registry cleaner technology to clean up all your registry problems too. Recommeded by CNET and PCMag.

Adopt the same policy that you would for your own health. Take a prevention is better than cure approach for the PC, keep it free from viruses most importantly. Next to keep the drives fast and fit, make sure you dont load tons of junk, install only the programs you will need. Regularly run disk cleanup and clear out the temporary files that get created in the background. The drive has to be protected from catching diseases like fragmentation which lead to a debilitating performance increasing chances of drive problems. Defragment with a good program, you can google for plenty of automatic tools.
